Monthly Archives: February 2013

It seems there were a few trends at the Oscars this year and thankfully one of them was not the Angelina Jolie leg thing.  Seems there were a lot of black beaded/sequined gowns.  There was also a lot of white. All in all, the Oscars and the Golden Globes were probably my two favorite fashion nights of awards season.  For the most part everyone looked so pretty and there wasn’t a single dress that made me wonder if someone had fired their stylist. Here, in the order that I saw them, are my favorites:

Naomi Watts in Armani Prive was probably my favorite look of the night. The dress looked so pretty on her and its asymmetrical neck line was gorg. She said she worked with Armani to design this, which leaves me wishing she’d put out a clothing line or something. The woman looked incredible.

Jessica Chastain looked pretty amazing in Armani Prive. It seems she was most peoples’ favorite. The combination of her hair color, skin tone and the shade of her dress worked so perfectly together. She looked like a bombshell.

Charlize Theron did not have one of my favorite dresses of the night – this Dior Haute Couture (although it is growing on me), but the woman left me drooling on my couch. She has an absolutely stunning face – she’s always been a girl crush of mine, but that hair cut. I love it! I have been contemplating chopping my hair and donating it and I’ve been wondering how short I should go. I now feel like if I get that hair cut, I will look like her (in my dreams, right?). I know her hair is this sort for a role she played, but dang girl. She looks absolutely beautiful.

Another one of my girl crushes is Jennifer Garner. She seems so nice and so down to earth. She spends a lot of time with her children and is making a marriage work in Hollywood (watch Ben Afleck’s Oscars speech if you haven’t). This plum colored Gucci gown looked so good on her and the shape of the dress (minus the poof of ruffles on the back) is my favorite dress shape. So good.

Sandra Bullock looked really nice in a beaded Elie Saab gown. She looks very classic.

Halle Berry looked like an Art Deco goddess. This dress makes her look so tall and slender (which I’m sure she really is and it’s not just the dress). The woman is gorgeous and this Atelier Versace dress just accentuates that.

Next we have Stacy Keibler in another black and metallic beaded gown. So many of this family of dresses at the Oscars, but clearly I loved them. This dress by Naeem Kahn really accentuates her body and makes her look stunning.

Finally, Nicole Kidman in another black beaded/sequin gown. This L’Wren Scott gown looks really great on her tall, slender bod. I’m not completely sure how I feel about the gold spirals, but I think they’re growing on me. Also, is that a Batman logo on her stomach? Even if it is, she pulls it off.

Also, did Salma Hayek’s dress remind anyone else of Kate Hudson’s Golden Globe dress from earlier this year? Check it out. They’re both Alexander McQueen, so I guess it’s not that surprising.

Since the Oscars are coming up this weekend, I’ll round out my favorite awards show looks by touching on the Grammys. Honestly, there were only two looks that REALLY did it for me at the Grammys and those were Katy Perry and Kelly Rowland. Everyone else was kind of meh. Only three others were even worth mentioning. Also, it seems Jennifer Lopez was single handedly trying to keep the Angelina Jolie leg thing alive – her dress was just bad.

I love, love, loved Katy Perry’s look. She looked SO pretty in this Gucci dress. So Priscilla Presley, which works out for her since she said her look was inspired by Priscilla.

Taylor Swift looked really pretty in a Grecian J. Mendel gown, but the woman wore my nerves. Is it just me or does she ALWAYS seem to be acting?

I loved seeing Rihanna in red and her hair/makeup looked so pretty. I love to see this side of her rather than the hard edgy side.

Beyonce mixed it up with an Osman pantsuit. She looked really good, but nothing about this look screams awards show to me. She could have worn this to a dinner.

This dress makes me want to be Kelly Rowland. She looks incredible. What a hot dress by Georges Chakras!

There seemed to be a lot of black and white at the Grammys and it was the first awards show where emerald was really showing up. Emerald has been declared 2013’s color of the year and I was really wondering when it was going to start showing up on celebrities and this was the night. There were several emerald dresses and I love the color, the dresses just didn’t really do it for me. Maybe I’m being too picky – we all know the music industry wears weirdness to the Grammys…it would be surprising if they didn’t.

I made a list, while watching the Superbowl, of my favorite commercials that aired during the game.  Here they are in no particular order!

Doritos Goat 4 Sale commercial made me laugh. I appreciate entertainment and stories in commercials.

Amy Poehler has been everywhere lately. This commercial made me laugh.

I’m not posting the commercial here because it was nothing special, but THEY’RE MAKING A FAST AND FURIOUS 6?!?!?!?!?!?! I mean, I guess if it pays Paul Walker’s bills, but didn’t they swear 5 was going to be the last one?! Do something new, Paul Walker!

The Doritos Princess commercial was really cute. Doritos always does a good job.

I thought the Go Daddy Big Idea commercial was funny. Quite the opposite of their first, wretched commercial.

Loved the new Budweiser Clydesdale commercial. So glad they brought the Clydesdales back to the Superbowl!

So sweet!

Last, but not least, I (along with everyone else on the planet) thought the Dodge “God Made a Farmer” commercial was amazing. It wasn’t apparent right away which brand the spot was for, but being the sleuth (read: observant) that I am, I called it way before the hubs had any idea what the commercial was for. Check it out, it plays right into the hearts of America.

And finally, to end with my least favorite/most gut wrenching. Forewarning, this commercial is disgusting and I hated it. It has certainly gotten a ton of views and buzz, so they did something right, but I couldn’t watch it. I still can’t watch it. 30 seconds of up close making out + sounds effects. *Puke*

This year, I wasn’t as on top of my stuff as usual at the beginning of the year. I usually post a list of the things I’d like to accomplish in that year. It’s more of a to do list than resolutions because it’s things like “Read a book a month” rather than “Be a nicer person.”

Since I didn’t give much thought to this at the end of 2012/beginning of 2013, I figured, giving it some thought as I start the next year of my life was just as appropriate.

Today I turn 30. In my 30 years, I’ve had a really great life. I’ve got an amazing family and have had and do have incredible friends. As anyone does, I’ve grown closer to some people and grown away from some people as time has passed. I’ve had experiences that range from living in a trailer and sharing a room/bunk beds with my little brother to living in a luxury high rise (with a washer and dryer!) in New York City. I’ve nearly died, moved across the country (not once, not twice, but three times), I’ve laughed, I’ve cried, I’ve cried while laughing, I’ve fallen in love, I’ve lost, I’ve traveled, I’ve spent a weekend never changing out of my pajamas, I’ve stayed out all night and watched the sun come up, I’ve earned a college degree and a graduate degree, I’ve paid off my student loans, I’ve purchased a car all by myself. It has been a really great life and I am happy that is mine. No two lives are the same, but I’m so happy with what mine has been and wish that everyone’s life and the people and experiences in it make them as happy, grateful and blessed as mine do. Reflecting on everything that I have and everything that I am makes me so hopeful and so happy to look forward to what my next 30 years hold and then the 30 years after that. I can’t wait to tell my grand children some day that I’m older than the internet…and cell phones…and tv remote controls…and cds (though they won’t know what those are).

Ok, so back to the task at hand. Here are the list of things I have compiled so far that I would like to accomplish while I am 30.

1. Take a cake decorating class
2. Take a calligraphy class
3. Read the Chronicles of Narnia
4. Walk around Chicago in the summer. Walk up Lake Michigan. Walk through Lincoln Park. Walk and explore with no real purpose like I did living in New York. I found it the best way to fall in love with the city.
5. Go camping
6. Donate my hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths
7. Learn to solve a Rubik’s cube
8. Take the hubs up to properly see Michigan (Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, Traverse City, Mackinac Island, Tahquamenon Falls)
9. Finally combine our bank accounts so our $$ is joint
10. Save $25,000
11. Hang pictures in our livingroom
12. One final, secret thing; I’ll provide an update/share if I can accomplish this one

This is a shorter list than I usually have, but there just aren’t that many things I feel I have to get done this year. If there’s something you think I should add to my list, let me know!
