22 weeks

The baby should weigh about a pound this week. Our little one is probably a little less than that, since it weighed in on the smaller side at our ultrasound, but who knows!

This was a pretty normal week around here. We worked, worked out, came home, made dinner, did dishes, got ready for bed, got some sleep, got up and repeated about 5 times.

Since I don’t have much to report, I’m going to keep it short and sweet and move along to my questions!

How far along? 22 Weeks
Total weight gain/loss? +10.6 lbs, just packing it on here lately
Maternity clothes? Same as last week – rocking the maternity jeans, sticking with my non-maternity shirts and still wearing the dresses I can in my closet. My wardrobe is definitely thinning out and forget about skirts.
Stretch marks? Still none yet.
Sleep? Still sleeping just fine. I did wake up in the middle of the night once this week though with my first charley horse. Oh man did it feel like it was never going to end. My calf was sore for a few days after. Oh, and if you’ve never looked up the history of the term charley horse, look it up, it’s interesting.
Best moment this week? My grandparents were in town this weekend for their first visit since we moved here. It was nice to show them around a little bit, spend some time with them and get some Chicago pizza with them!
Miss Anything?
Nope – I do need to start missing sugary snacks a little more…
Movement? This week I’m starting to think what I’m feeling has to be baby. I’m not feeling it a lot, but it seems to be around the same times (though I do eat at the same times every day) and I’m thinking it’s too low to be my stomach.
Food cravings? None
Anything making you nauseous? Nope
The charley horse is definitely a new one. Still some heart burn, but it seems to be letting up a bit (I think I’ve narrowed this down mostly to tomatoes). Also some round ligament pain (or pulling near my hips).
Gender Prediction? Our nephew says its a boy and one of our nieces says it’s a girl.
Labor Signs? Nope
Belly Button in or out? In
Wedding rings on or off? On
Mood? Even keel
Looking forward to? Really digging in and getting moving on all things baby. Taking a Bradley Method (natural child birth, father coached, class), putting a registry together, getting some things for the bedroom, etc. Also, fall football and fall baking!
Now some words from Dad: Today’s entry will be more of a reflection of a story I told somebody earlier this week. My sophomore year in high school I had an English teacher named Mr. Deines. Two distinct happenings from his class have stuck with me throughout the years. The first, which has nothing to do with this blog, was when he caught one of his top students reading Cliff Notes of “Catcher in the Rye” in class. He promptly scolded her while ripping up the Cliff Notes book in front of the class, which was both terrifying and amazing at the same time. The second memory I have of Mr. Deines is from when the topic of beauty came up in class. He told the class that “the most beautiful women in the world” are pregnant women. Of course, as 15 and 16-year-olds we all replied “Eww!” and “that’s so weird.” But now, 15 years later, I can say that A) I actually see where Mr. Deines was coming from and B) I kind of agree with him! Amid all of the celebrities, models and People Magazine telling us how we should define beauty, I find myself having a hard time not looking at a pregnant women and thinking “that’s a beautiful sight.” Even though I know that being pregnant may not be the most glamorous of occasions, it’s something that women, if lucky, are able to experience only a few times over the course of their lives. It’s a deeply special occasion, seeing a woman being strong, bringing a new person into the world. Seeing Melissa, and all the other moms that are going through this special time in their lives, it’s a blessing to be able to witness the beauty of a pregnancy. It’s the opposite of the sometimes vain and narcissistic society of celebrity we live in – and it always makes me smile.

21 Weeks again

Not a whole lot new to report this week. I’m just trying to get into the researching and to learn about what we should buy/register for, what we shouldn’t, what classes we should take, what I need to get done now versus later, etc.

I did take a pilates class for the first time this week in about two years. It was a good workout and I’d definitely like to keep it up. I had a nice soreness afterwards from it too. Pilates is supposed to be good to help improve labor and delivery, so I figure why not! Maybe I’ll add some pre-natal yoga in too. We’ll see.

How far along? 21 Weeks
Total weight gain/loss? +9 lbs
Maternity clothes? Definitely rocking the maternity jeans, but sticking to my non-maternity dresses and shirts still.
Stretch marks? Not yet. Fingers crossed slathering lotion on is helping my cause!
Sleep? I was actually prompted this week to Google whether babies in utero have growth spurts like babies do once they’re born. I’ve been super tired this week, even though you’re supposed to have all the energy in your second trimester. Turns out they can/do, so wondering if ours went through one this week. In the meantime, I’ll keep getting all the sleep.
Best moment this week? We finally booked our hotels for Italy this week…which is good since we leave Sept 1! I was getting really stressed about it, but feel SO much better now!
Miss Anything?
Not really.
Movement? Definitely feeling movement, but I’m still not positive if it’s baby or digestion. I guess we’ll see how it continues.
Food cravings? Well, I went and got that cupcake this week. Does it count now?
Anything making you nauseous? No nausea.
It seems like the heartburn let up a bit this week. Probably partially because I have discovered Tums. Though, I really don’t feel like I’ve had to take them much. Not much other than just being tired.
Gender Prediction? Jury’s still out.
Labor Signs? Not yet!
Belly Button in or out? In
Wedding rings on or off? On
Mood? Normal. Just tired.
Looking forward to? Our upcoming trip to Italy!
Now some words from Dad: Hi everybody! This week-on, I’ll be adding a couple of my own thoughts on pending parenthood and Melissa’s pregnancy. This week, we finally started a Google Doc where we’re sharing names we like! The name conversations have been fun and surprisingly not acrimonious at all. Figuring out the deal-breakers up front (like avoiding names of exes) has made the brainstorming so much easier. I’m super pumped to pick names, because I feel like names make you visualize what kind of person your child might become. That said, I’m keeping my lips sealed on whatever names we pick! I CAN tell you, though, that we’ve taken Gaylord off the table for our boy names… :)

20 Weeks

We are officially halfway to 40 weeks! It’s going to be here before we know it!

We had a pretty eventful week this week! And in a good way. On Tuesday night, I went to something called Bump Club, where I listed to a talk about Sleep Strategies and Sleep Safety, which was super interesting. At the end of the night, I was sent home with a goody bag with tons of stuff in it (2 swaddles, 2 bottles, a burp cloth, a pacifier, samples of a bunch of things, 2 books, etc) – pretty great if you ask me! I also won a stroller and a car seat in the raffle at the end of the night! So crazy and so amazing!

On Wednesday night I had my first pre-natal massage. Kind of weird, but definitely enjoyable. I certainly wouldn’t turn one down.

Then, on Friday, we had our 20 week ultrasound and appointment. I was really nervous about this appointment given we hadn’t really had any screening done prior to now. Everything looked great and we got some pictures too!

Here’s a profile we got to see during the ultrasound. Mini Mitch weighed in at 34% for weight, but its limbs were long, so it seems like this kid is definitely ours. The baby was in a really good position for all the pictures that needed to be taken and the ultrasound tech kept saying how chill the baby was throughout the whole thing. It was nice that I didn’t have to get into any weird positions or get up and move around for her to get what she needed.

This is one of the cooler pictures I thought we got. I love that you can see the pelvis, spine, ribs, brain and even a little ear. If you look closely you can even see all the little vertebrae. It’s amazing how well developed everything already is at the halfway point!

Eventually this little one woke up and started to move around more. It looked like it was enjoying a little morning yoga holding its foot above its head with its hand. You can see the other little foot up above the belly.

We chose not to find out the gender, which turned out to be just fine since Mini Mitch was not in the mood to reveal all. There still isn’t a person in the world who knows the gender of this kid. Guess we’ll all just have to wait and see!

How far along? 20 Weeks
Total weight gain/loss? +7.4 lbs
Maternity clothes? I wore a pair of maternity jeans for the first time this week and they worked out just fine. Other than that, still sticking to my regular clothes.
Stretch marks? Nope
Sleep? Still sleeping just fine.
Best moment this week? I had a pretty eventful week this week, but the best thing was probably the 20 week appointment and seeing the baby via ultrasound. It was so nice to see and hear that everything looks “fantastic.” It definitely helped to calm my nerves a bit.
Miss Anything?
Movement? Turns out what I’ve been feeling truly has been food digesting and not the baby. My placenta is in front of the baby, so that is acting as the punching bag for the time being, keeping me from feeling any movement just yet. Hopefully soon, once this little one is a little bigger.
Food cravings? I kind of want a cupcake, but I haven’t acted on it. I’m not considering it a craving until I just HAVE to run out and get it.
Anything making you nauseous? Nope.
Heartburn. Every day. Every time I eat or am hungry. I did take Tums for the first time in my life this week. It helped, I think. Oh, I also half remember leg cramps a couple of times this week. Not enough to fully wake me up or even remember first thing in the morning, but I’m pretty sure they happened. Calf cramps. Twice.
Gender Prediction? Still don’t have one, but Chris and mom think it’s a boy.
Labor Signs? None.
Belly Button in or out? In
Wedding rings on or off? On
Mood? Pretty even keel.
Looking forward to? I’m ready to start planning things.

19 Weeks2

The baby can hear our voices this week. I better learn to curb my love for profanity!

We were back in Chicago this week and that means back to work and back to regular life, which I enjoyed. I’m feeling refreshed from vacation. It was weird to be away for so long.

I’m finally starting to feel a little bit of interest in planning ahead for this child. I feel like the 20 week appointment is my next big milestone that I’m nervous about and want to make it through before really getting emotionally invested. I’m sure that sounds absolutely crazy to most people, but I’ve already lost two babies and I just want to be sure this one isn’t going anywhere before I start making plans and getting excited. If you’ve ever dealt with infertility, I’m sure you understand. If not, I’m happy that you’ll never have to understand.

Soon, we’ll have to really start thinking about names and things like cribs and strollers. Not quite yet though. More on that to come!!

How far along? 19 Weeks
Total weight gain/loss? +6.4 lbs
Maternity clothes? I have my maternity jeans on standby, but my looser or stretchier dresses and tops are still cutting it for now. Once it cools off and I need to wear things like jeans and sweaters, I won’t be able to pull this off.
Stretch marks? Not yet
Sleep? Still sleeping like a log. So much so that my new thing seems to be not to change positions throughout the night, so I’m waking up with a sore back and need to get up and walk around in the morning to loosen it up.
Best moment this week? It was a getting-back-to-normal week after vacation, which was nice. I’m happy to be back into my normal workout routine and able to run errands and get some chores done.
Miss Anything?
Not yet.
Movement? Still not sure if what I’m feeling is the baby.
Food cravings? Lucky Charms have sounded good a couple times recently, but I think that’s just because I love sweets. Give me all the sugar.
Anything making you nauseous? No nausea.
Still dealing with the heartburn. Also feeling like I’m hungry more often, but that’s about it.
Gender Prediction? Still don’t have one.
Labor Signs? Nope!
Belly Button in or out? In
Wedding rings on or off? On
Mood? Average. Still enjoying as much of summer as I can.
Looking forward to? We have our 20 week ultrasound this Friday, which I’m super nervous about, but I’m looking forward to that. Just hoping everything looks ok!
