Buzzings

As I do every year, in 2013, I made a list of things to do during the year. I didn’t actually make the list on January 1st as I typically do, I made it right around my 30th birthday. Nevertheless, I’m going back to my January 1st, full year, to do list. A couple of things did not get completed, but I’ll carry them over. Here’s what was on my 2013 list:

1. Take a cake decorating class
2. Take a calligraphy class (4/9/13)
3. Read the Chronicles of Narnia
4. Walk around Chicago in the summer. Walk up Lake Michigan. Walk through Lincoln Park. Walk and explore with no real purpose like I did living in New York. I found it the best way to fall in love with the city.
5. Go camping (5/31/13)
6. Donate my hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths (3/29/13)
7. Learn to solve a Rubik’s cube (did it once, but with a guide, can’t do it on my own yet)
8. Take the hubs up to properly see Michigan (Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, Traverse City, Mackinac Island, Tahquamenon Falls) (Aug ’13)
9. Finally combine our bank accounts so our $$ is joint (1/19/13)
10. Save $$
11. Hang pictures in our livingroom (You can see more about this one here; April/May ’13)
12. One final, secret thing; I’ll provide an update/share if I can accomplish this one (Done, but needs to be re-done, so will carry over to 2014’s list)

Here is the list I have put together for 2014. This may get added to – we’ll see!

1. Take a cake decorating class
2. Take another calligraphy class
3. Read a book a month, including the Chronicles of Narnia
4. Repeat the secret thing; I’ll provide an update/share if I can complete
5. Learn to solve a Rubik’s cube
6. Get a puppy (We were supposed to get one in September of ’13 and a week before we were suppose to pick him up, the breeder let us know she had decided to keep him. We were heart broken and hope to get one this spring/summer.)
7. Stop swearing? (Whether or not this can be accomplished is questionable)
8. Save more $$ (maybe we’ll think about trying to buy a place in a year or two)
9. Take pics of scraps from the week (inspired by this)
10. Work out at least 2x per week
11. Plan a friend date twice a month
12. Work hard to make more girl friends
13. Redesign Blog
14. Knit one thing a month (or at least 12 projects during the year)
15. Run 3 5Ks
16. Take the stairs. At home. At work in the same elevator bank. Everywhere I can…unless carrying heavy luggage.

Some secondary things that I know I may not stick to or that I am already doing…
1. In bed by 11
2. Post on the blog once a week
3. Floss once a week (or more)
4. Less Candy Crush (I need a CCAA), Facebook & TV at the end of the day

Happy New Year!! What’s on your list of things to do this year?

vmw_334$!400x

Happy Anniversary (a day late) to the guy who knows what I’m thinking before I’m thinking it. To the guy who makes me dinner when I work late and then does all the dishes too. To the guy who cleans the shower/bathtub because he knows it’s the one thing I really hate to clean. Happy anniversary to the guy who keeps me warm when I first climb into our cold bed and the guy who takes my picture every day. Happy anniversary to the guy who drives me to and from places so I don’t have to take a cab.

It has been an amazing two years with so many experiences. We’ve traveled to new places, tried new things, made new friends, and grown even closer. I can’t wait to see what the next 2 years hold for us an then the next two and the next two and the next two and the next two…

The hubs has started a new project that I find really interesting and wanted to share. About a month ago he started picking up one piece of trash a day and throwing it away for whoever just dropped it and didn’t dispose of it properly. He’ll take a picture as he’s throwing it away and post to instagram with hashtags like #1pieceperday & #cleanup. He actually just started a new instagram account just for this today!

See the pic in the middle of all the cigarette butts? He picked all these up the day after a conversation we had on the walk to work about how many cigarette butts there are all over the ground and how it’s disgusting. I don’t understand why it’s so hard to make sure they’re out and then throw them away. I also don’t understand why it’s totally ok to throw cigarette butts wherever you want. He picked all of these up in one block…and then bleached his hands, obviously.

I asked him why he started doing this and he told me it’s because he doesn’t feel like his day to day job really contributes to bettering society in a tangible way, so this is his way to help and give back. At the end of his life he’ll be able to look back and know that he did something constructive and he won’t have to worry about whether it helped anyone or did any good. Also, it’s a free way for him to do something every day.

By picking up trash, he’s helping clean up the city, he’s cutting down (even if it’s a very small portion) on the pollution in the world (and maybe more importantly in Lake Michigan), and he’s (hopefully!) inspiring others to do the same.

He and I both know that him picking up #1pieceperday is really small, but it’s tangible, it’s free, and it something that can be done without having to make any kind of change to your every day life or go out of your way to do. You may want to wash your hands more than you did before, though.

I think it would be really neat if the next time I looked at #1pieceperday on Instagram, his pictures weren’t the only ones that came up.

Last month, my favorite magazine (in fact, the only magazine I read every month) teamed up with Birchbox, likely to cross promote the brands, but also to provide some of their favorite samples. This is what my Birchbox looked like:

In my Birchbox, I received:

– Nexxus Youth Renewal Rejuvenating Elixir
– Skin & Co Roma Cleansing Body Gel with Olive & Sicilian Orange Extracts
– StriVectin-SD Eye Concentrate for Wrinkles (what are they trying to tell me?)
– Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics Anti-Shine Mattifier
– Weleda Body Lotion (Three individual pack-its)

So fun. I really enjoyed the two brands teaming up this month. It made me look forward to receiving my Birchbox even more!

In February, around my 30th birthday, you may remember that I posted a list of things I’d like to accomplish this year. I wanted to provide a little update and check in on how it’s going!

1. Take a cake decorating class – still need to do!
2. Take a calligraphy class – done, but want to take another! Calligraphy for a lefty is freaking difficult!
3. Read the Chronicles of Narnia – It’s staring at me from my dresser. Maybe this summer?
4. Walk around Chicago in the summer. Walk up Lake Michigan. Walk through Lincoln Park. Walk and explore with no real purpose like I did living in New York. I found it the best way to fall in love with the city. – Waiting for it to get nicer, but working on it slowly.
5. Go camping – Going the end of this month! Can’t wait, we just got our tent on Monday and our sleeping bags should be delivered today!
6. Donate my hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths – Done and done! See my post about it here.
7. Learn to solve a Rubik’s cube – I’ve done this once, but while following a guide. Still need to really learn.
8. Take the hubs up to properly see Michigan (Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, Traverse City, Mackinac Island, Tahquamenon Falls) – This was planned for the second week of June, but we may have to move it now. tbd.
9. Finally combine our bank accounts so our $$ is joint – Done!
10. Save $25,000 – Working on it.
11. Hang pictures in our livingroom – Done! See my post about it here.
12. One final, secret thing; I’ll provide an update/share if I can accomplish this one – Has been done, but needs to be re-done.

For quite some time now, I’ve wanted to donate my hair. It is something that has been weighing on my heart and when I saw a link to Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths page on Facebook, I took the time to do research on different organizations. I had never really thought about where I’d want to donate my hair and had really only heard of Locks of Love. What I found out was really interesting and it’s something that I don’t think a lot of people know, so I wanted to share.

Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths:
Creates wigs for women with cancer
Gives wigs away for free
Requires a minimum 8″ donation of hair

Locks of Love:
Creates wigs/hair pieces/prosthetics for children under 21 suffering from permanent hair loss, primarily from alopecia
Sells wigs on a sliding scale based on financial need
Requires a minimum of 10″ of hair
Sells some of the hair they receive to offset manufacturing costs

Based on these things, I decided Beautiful Lengths was the way I wanted to go. As an organization, they give me a more warm and fuzzy feeling and I like that they give wigs FOR FREE to women with cancer.

So, I went into the salon I’ve been going to since moving to Chicago (FM Hair Studio) armed with some celebrity hair inspiration (via Pinterest, of course):

This is how ridiculously long my hair was and my girl, Madeline, prepping to cut it:
20130331-230834.jpg

One last measurement just to check the length and then the cutting begins! They used clippers, which are apparently easier than scissors, so here I am with half really long hair and half shoulder length hair. And then here’s everything in the bag – the hair’s all gone!

Cutting, blow drying, styling…

And here’s the quick story:
I had super long hair, it’s now short and can be straight or curled. See, look, here’s the hair I’m donating.

I’m so happy to be donating my hair to this great organization and I cannot wait to do it again in a few years!

I made a list, while watching the Superbowl, of my favorite commercials that aired during the game.  Here they are in no particular order!

Doritos Goat 4 Sale commercial made me laugh. I appreciate entertainment and stories in commercials.

Amy Poehler has been everywhere lately. This commercial made me laugh.

I’m not posting the commercial here because it was nothing special, but THEY’RE MAKING A FAST AND FURIOUS 6?!?!?!?!?!?! I mean, I guess if it pays Paul Walker’s bills, but didn’t they swear 5 was going to be the last one?! Do something new, Paul Walker!

The Doritos Princess commercial was really cute. Doritos always does a good job.

I thought the Go Daddy Big Idea commercial was funny. Quite the opposite of their first, wretched commercial.

Loved the new Budweiser Clydesdale commercial. So glad they brought the Clydesdales back to the Superbowl!

So sweet!

Last, but not least, I (along with everyone else on the planet) thought the Dodge “God Made a Farmer” commercial was amazing. It wasn’t apparent right away which brand the spot was for, but being the sleuth (read: observant) that I am, I called it way before the hubs had any idea what the commercial was for. Check it out, it plays right into the hearts of America.

And finally, to end with my least favorite/most gut wrenching. Forewarning, this commercial is disgusting and I hated it. It has certainly gotten a ton of views and buzz, so they did something right, but I couldn’t watch it. I still can’t watch it. 30 seconds of up close making out + sounds effects. *Puke*
